A recent study conducted on behalf of the Health Food Manufacturers’ Association (HFMA) has revealed that 1 in 12 adults are very much unaware of what constitutes fruit and veg.
Worringly, more than 8% of Britons thought that items including tomato ketchup, Terry’s chocolate orange and strawberry ice cream counted towards one of their five a day.
Over half of UK adults aren’t eating enough fruit and veg to reach the five a day target as well, the poll of 10,000 people revealed. On top of that, Brits only consume three and a half 80g portions a day, less than any other major European country.
The study also asked participants whether they believed their diets had worsened since the economic downturn, to which over a third (37 per cent) who responded claimed that it had. A third of 18 to 24 year olds said that they preferred to eat junk food because it was cheaper.
Guidelines published by the Department of Health suggest that people should eat five portions of fruit and veg a day to reduce the risk of obesity and heart disease.
