At Fruit 4 London, we are always seeking to source fruit from environmentally sustainable sources, but the global trade in fruit is huge and exports are at an all time high in fruit producing countries around the world.
In 2000, 43 million tonnes of fruit was exported for delivery worldwide. In 2010, this had grown to 70 million tonnes, and the trend is growing.
Interesting fact: It is more environmentally friendly to grow tomatoes in Spain and transport them to the UK than it is to grow them here, because of the energy that we have to use to achieve the same growing conditions that Spain gets for free from the sun.
It is due to this fact that fruit export is so high. We source our fruit baskets from where it’s best to grow it, and because we live in such a cold climate, if we want exotic fruits exotic fruits delivered to our door then they have to be flown over to the UK.
The list of the top 10 fruit exporting countries is as follows:
10 – Spain
9 – USA
8 – Chile
7 – Netherlands
6 – Italy
5 – Belgium
4 – China
3 – Ecuador
2 – Mexico
1 – Turkey
We try and source our fruit from environmentally friendly sources, and where possible we buy fruit that has come from European countries in order to reduce the carbon footprint of your fruit baskets and fruit boxes.
